The monument to the Assen Dynasty is dedicated to the kings Assen, Peter, Kaloyan and Ivan Assen II. It was built in 1985 with the celebration of 800 years since the brothers Assen and Peter’s rebellion. The sword, around which the four Assens are situated, symbolizes the power and the rise of medieval Bulgaria.
Assens are three brothers who ruled Bulgaria after its liberation from Byzantium slavery. The first two – Assen and Peter have dedicated their lives to Bulgaria to survive as an independent state and their brother – Kaloyan to become one of the main forces in Eastern Europe.
Their heir King Ivan Assen II (Yoan Assen II) turned out to be an outstanding diplomat and raised Bulgaria to its second historic apogee.
