Dryanovo Monastery “St. Archangel Michael” and Bacho Kiro Cave
The Dryanovo Monastery “St. Archangel Michael” is one of the most significant monasteries in Bulgaria, located in the picturesque Dryanovo Gorge near the town of Dryanovo. Founded in the 12th century, it has established itself over the centuries as an important spiritual and cultural center.
The monastery played a key role in Bulgarian history during the April Uprising in 1876, when it served as a refuge and fortress for the detachment of Pop Hariton and Bacho Kiro. After heavy battles, it was almost completely destroyed, but was later restored.
Today, the monastery is active and is a popular destination for pilgrimage and tourism, combining spirituality, history, and beautiful natural surroundings.
In the area around the monastery, along the scenic canyons of the Andaka and Dryanovska rivers, lies the first cave in Bulgaria to be developed for tourism, as early as 1937 by local enthusiasts. Three years later, it was named “Bacho Kiro Cave” in honor of the hero of the April Uprising.
Modern and impressive lighting allows visitors to enjoy its fascinating formations with evocative names such as “The Rain Hall,” “The Stone Flower,” “The Poplars,” “The Lake of Happiness,” “The Medusas,” “The Bear Slide,” “The Bear Meadow,” “The Lonely Stalactite,” and “The Hall of Pop Hariton,” among others.
When visiting this region, don’t miss the scenic Dryanovo eco-trail, which offers beautiful views and a close connection with nature.
